MR-2 Specialist

MR2s are very close to our hearts at Drift Limits Performance, having carried over our staff from ‘Pacific Works’ who have been the South East’s leading specialist for over 10 years. If we can’t fix it no-one can!

If you are looking for a reliable specialist to service and maintain your Toyota MR2 then look no further. We are happy to work on all versions from the early Mk1’s through to the most current.

Upon your first visit at Drift Limits Performance, we always recommend a health check of your vehicle before any works are carried out. This will be a visual check, no tools involved bar our diagnostic test. With this we can give you an accurate list of any issues with your vehicle, this way we can help you prioritise cost vs urgency, ensuring your money is spent in the right places. This would usually cost £90 but we offer this at half price for MR2 owners.

Mk1 MR2

Mk1 Servicing

A service is a vehicle inspection that keeps your car in a reliable, safe and fully-functioning condition based on guidelines set out by the vehicle manufacturer. As a general rule of thumb we recommend a service every 12000 miles or 12 months, which ever comes sooner. We’ve encountered many running issues solved with a simple service. Take a look at our options below, if you are unsure on what you need feel free to contact us for more information.

Minor Service
Spark plugs, rotor arm, distributor cap, oil filter, oil change, air filter

MK1 Naturally Aspirated/Supercharged

Mk1 Timing / Cam Belt

We recommend you change your Cam belt/ Timing belt when your engine reaches 60,000 miles/100,000 km and every 4 years after. This process includes changing the timing belt and tension bearing.

MK1 NA/Supercharged
(Timing belt + Tension bearing only)

Mk1 Clutch

If you are experience “clutch slip” or the biting point of the clutch is high on the duration of the clutch pedal travel, it is more than likely you are due a new clutch. It is also common and recommended to renew or skim your flywheel at the same time.

Mk1 Common Faults

The MK1 MR2 is actually one of the more reliable generations of the three. We recommend you check for the following faults

Distributor O-ring + Timing
Over time it is common for the Distributor O-ring to fail causing a leak. Once replaced the timing will need to be set. It is possible for the second oil seal within the distributor to fail, if so it will need to be dissembled, replaced and reassembled which will increase the price. Please get in touch for a quote.

Rocker Cover Gasket
As like the Distributor O-ring the rubber rocker cover gasket can deteriorate and break down over time producing prominent oil leaks around the head of the engine.

Mk2 Timing/Cam Belt

We recommend you change your Cam belt/ Timing belt when your engine reaches 60,000 miles/100,000 km and every 4 years after. This process includes changing the timing belt, tension and idler bearing, water pump, crank oil seal along with the front and rear seal on the oil pump.

Mk2 Clutch

If you are experience “clutch slip” or the biting point of the clutch is high on the duration of the clutch pedal travel, it is more than likely you are due a new clutch.

Changing your clutch provides a good time to skim or replace your flywheel.

Mk2 Common Faults

There are a few common faults to look for on your MK2 MR2. See below for descriptions. Unless already fixed, the chances are your vehicle will be suffering from them.

“Pipes from hell”
This is an issue found through Rev1 to Rev4 where two copper coolant pipes that are hard mounted to the chassis above the fuel tank. Over time vibrations and stress/flex can cause the pipes to crack. This can be  identified by air in the coolant system, low coolant, puddles under your car and a running or bubbling sound around the stereo area. Toyota revised this on the revision 5 but only on one side.

Pricing varies depending on year and specification:

Window Regulators
This can cause multiple issues such as windows not going up and down, a grinding noise, the windows falling into the door (in extreme cases).

Corroded Cancer Bars
Toyota chassis support bars are made of mild steel and are open ended, this allows moisture to get inside the bars and cause rust from the inside out.
